Chief Hill presented Officer Norm LaBonte with a Departmental Citation Award at the March 14th Gerrish Township Board Meeting. This is one of the highest awards that can be obtained from the Gerrish Township Police Department.* Officer LaBonte received this award in recognition of his performance while on duty on June 12, 2016 in response to a call to assist Roscommon County Deputy Joseph Quintana with a 52 year-old female suicidal subject who was going to jump off the I-75 overpass on N. Roscommon Road. Through his initiative and determination, Officer LaBonte assisted in talking the subject down and to seek professional medical attention, therefore providing instrumental assistance in protecting life.
Officer Norman LaBonte and Deputy Joseph Quintana were recently presented Life Saving Awards from Roscommon County Sheriff Ed Stern. We would like to thank both of these law enforcement officers for their professionalism, compassion and team work during an unusual and difficult situation. Without the quick response of law enforcement the outcome of this incident would have been much different.
*It should be noted that in order to receive the Gerrish Township Police Department Citation Award, an officer must exhibit service in the line of duty that requires unusual thoroughness, conscientiousness, determination and initiative in the performance of a difficult assignment. The service need not involve exposure to personal danger, but it must have been instrumental in protecting life or property. It many include an act of exceptional courage and bravery or when because of the outstanding nature of the act, a life is saved, a serious crime prevented or a person is arrested who committed a serious crime.
