The 2018 boating season is quickly approaching on beautiful Higgins Lake. Gerrish Township Police Department wants to share important proactive information to all residents and visitors that recreate on our lake about the rules regarding public lateral road ends (roads that traverse into Higgins Lake).
First, all residents and visitors may use the waters of Higgins Lake concurrent to recreational use. Where one will face an issue is when one decides to moor their boat overnight at a public lateral road end. Michigan State Statute entitled P.A. 56 of 2012 “prohibits mooring or docking a vessel between the hours of 12:00 a.m. and Sunrise” while at a public lateral road end.
Additionally, if a vessel is moored overnight on a Riparian property, Gerrish Township Police will take a report for Recreational Trespassing and each report will be reviewed on a case by case basis for possible charges as they relate to the boat mooring and Recreational Trespassing.
Please stop into the Gerrish Township Police Department for further information regarding Public Act 56 provisions or any other questions you may have regarding the mooring of your vessels while recreating on Higgins Lake.
We are now accepting Dock Permits for the 2018 summer season and these can be obtained at the Police Department at 3075 E. Higgins Lake Drive or at www.gerrishpolice.org. One seasonal dock may be permitted under the authority of P.A. 56 at a public lateral road end. Some conditions do apply.
