School Bus Safety

Did you know that students getting on and off school buses are protected by the law making it illegal for drivers to pass a school bus while dropping off or picking up passengers.

State law requires drivers to stop for a school bus that has its red lights flashing and stop-arm extended and you must remain stopped as long as the red lights flash and the stop-arm is out. YOU MUST STOP AT LEAST 20 FEET AWAY FROM A BUS WITH ITS RED LIGHTS FLASHING.

  • SCHOOL BUSES ARE LIKE TRAFFIC SIGNALS:
  • When overhead lights are flashing YELLOW – Slow down and prepare to stop
  • When overhead lights are flashing RED – Stop
  • When hazard warning lights are flashing – Proceed with caution

You may not pass when red or amber warning overhead lights are flashing. The only exception to this is when you are APPROACHING a bus from the opposite direction of travel on a road with a least two lanes in each direction.
